In Dec 2001, homage was paid to war martyrs at a solemn ceremony held at the Command War Memorial, Veer Smriti on the ocassion of 54th anniversary of the raising of Western Command. The GOC-in-C, Western Command, Lt Gen Surjit Singh, on behalf of all ranks, laid a wreath at the memorial in Chandimandir Cantonment. As part of the celebrations, a social get-together was held in the Command Officers' Mess which was graced by the Governor of Punjab, Lt Gen(Retd) J.F.R. Jacob and a large number of retired officers residing in and around Chandigarh. A barakhana for the troops was also organised

In Dec 2001, Lt Gen S.P. Malhotra, Commandant of AMC Centre, School and Records visited the AMC War Memorial in Lucknow cantonment and placed a wreath in homage to those who laid down their lives.

In Jan 2002, the 5th Battalion of the Maratha Regiment celebrated the completion of two hundred years of its raising in Rajasthan. The bi-centenary celebrations began with an impressive guard of honour given to the chief guest of the function, Lt Gen J.J. Singh, GOC, 1 Corps and Colonel of the regiment. A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the unit war memorial where wreaths were laid by the Colonel of the Regiment and other senior officers of the regiment.

In Jan 2002, the 198th Group Day-cum-Reunion of BEG, popularly known as "Bengal Sappers", was held in Roorkee. Lt Gen Hari Uniyal, Engineer-in-Chief, Army Headquarters, reviewed the parade and took salute at the march-past. Addressing the parade, Lt Gen Uniyal said that Bengal Sappers was the first in the Armed Forces to have the affiliation with both INS Brahmaputra and Air Force Station, Sarsawa. Later, at a solemn wreath-laying ceremony, Lt Gen Uniyal laid a wreath at the BEG War Memorial in memory of those war heroes who laid down their lives and brought glory to the nation. A two-minute silence was observed and the last post was sounded on this solemn occasion.

The Air Force Base at Chabua in Upper Assam takes pride in being called the 'Eastern Bastion', helping keep the eastern frontiers of the nation secure and infallible. The airfield was in fact a second world war airbase of the Allied Forces. Constructed in 1939, the airfield was extensively used for launching operations against the Japanese and was abandoned after the war. In 1962, in response to the Chinese invasion of Tibet and the subsequent threat it posed to the North-East, the IAF commenced operations from this airfield. The unit was recently declared as the "best fighter squadron" of EAC for the year 2001.

In Feb 2002, the PCTC celebrated its diamond jubilee. A 'Remembrance Day' was observed at the war memorial and Lt Gen Krishan Pal, Colonel Commandant of the Pioneer Corps and Quartermaster General of the Army, led the serving and retired officers of the Corps in laying wreaths. On this occasion, a special sainik sammelan was held which was addressed by Lt Gen Krishan Pal. The Army Postal Corps released a first day cover commemorating the diamond jubilee of the corps. Lt Gen Krishan Pal also released a CD on Record Office Instructions which is designed and compiled by Maj Surendran, the Senior Record Officer of the PCTC. The Reunion culminated with a pagal gymkhana.

In Feb 2002, the 7th Battalion of the Rajputana Rifles celebrated the 30th anniversary of their victory at the battle of Mynamati during Indo-Pak war of 1971. Fiftyone braves of the 7th Rajputana Rifles made the supreme sacrifice and 131 were injured in this battle. The day is celebrated as its 'Battle Honour Day.' A sainik sammelan was addressed by Brig A.S. Brar. This was followed by a wreath-laying ceremony to pay homage to the martyrs. A presentation on the battle was also made. It was attended by Maj Gen N.S. Pathania, GOC, Delhi Area.

In Feb 2002, at a solemn but impressive ceremony, a battalion of the Madras Regiment observed Remembrance Day at Golconda, Hyderabad in memory of martyrs. The occasion saw a large number of retired and serving personnel paying their respects to the martyrs. The function began with the laying of wreaths at the war memorial by Brig G.M. Nair and other senior officers. This was followed by distribution of gifts and monetary assistance to war widows by Brig R. Rangarajan(Retd), an ex-Commanding Officer of the unit.


Siachen Memorial, Siachen base camp

It is a stone memorial with a scroll of honour listing 616 soldiers who died defending the strategically important Siachen glacier. The inscription reads:

"Quartered in snow, silent to remain.
When the bugle calls, they shall rise and march again."
