Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo, Jara Aankh Me Bhar Lo Paani,
Jo Shaheed Huye Hain Unki, Jara Yaad Karo Kurbani.

Shaheed Kargil Smriti Park, Patna, Bihar

The fifty-day Kargil war led to eighteen valiant soldiers from Bihar embracing martyrdom. Dr Ranjan Prasad Yadav, Rashtriya Janata Dal Rajya Sabha member donated Rs. 25 lakhs out of his development fund for the Kargil Park. This beautiful park is situated at the northeast end of sprawling Gandhi Maidan, a 5 minute ride by auto-rickshaw from Patna Railway Station and Bus Stand.

In the center of park is the eye-catching memorial. Sculptor, Jai Narain Singh and Head Mason Md. Abdul Salaam did their best to chisel out this magnificent memorial. The base is made of marble. The upper black portion of the base is made of Makrana marble and the canopy of the memorial is of white makrana marble. Apart from the cluster of elegant fountains and the marble laid circular pavements, the main feature of the park is a bronze rifle kept in downside and covered with a cap under the roof of the memorial.

To make the park easily accessible with a better surrounding, nearby rickshaw/auto stands were reorganized. Roads were rolled out in shape of a boulevard. Another park adjacent to it was renovated. Powerful flood lighting arrangements were done and now nights are flood-lighted giving a day-like feeling. The beauty of the park is fascinating in a full moon night.

This memorial was built on the famous Beach Road Promenade near the 'Mountain of Rocks' by the Pondicherry PWD (Public Works Department). On July 26, 2000 to commemorate 'Vijay Divas', around one thousand Pondicherry students of different schools took out a procession in the afternoon to mark the day. In the evening at around 8:00 p.m., the Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry lit the lamp at the memorial.

After this the Lt. Governor went to all the fifteen places where the students of different schools had arranged some events and decorated the place with flowers, decorative lamps and candles to mark the day. The Governor also lit a candle near the Gandhi statue on beach road, which was followed by a cultural programme at Gandhi Thidal. One could easily see glowing lamps and candles throughout the city. Street corners and specific places were beautifully decorated with candles and rangol.
